I know I'm going to get downvoted here but the duke seems like such an ass I only got up to chapter 36 but someone please explain to me if I have it wrong but the duke decides to take a husband, just to plan to kill him... why? If you didn't want a husband, you could have just refused the marriage proposal. And why go through the trouble of pretending to be someone you're not? And you mess with this poor man's mind for what reason? Is the duke mentally ill? Messed up in the head? Not that that excuses his behavior but damn I just feel sad for michel.

I came hoping for the stereotypical cold duke of the north romance but he wasn't supposed to be ice cold like this!

Oh and not to mention how he has been DRUGGING Michel all this time and is purposefully isolating him. Like legitimately sir, what has Michel done to you to deserve this level of abuse??

He has his reasons that are very spoilery, tho I agree that Michele doesn't deserve this treatment at all. If you stick to it I think you'll get what you want tho, Ian isn't mentally ill but what happened in his past messed him up in the head and he equates love to loathing due to his mother (the only person who loved him and protected him when he was little) killing himself in front of him because she loved his father too much to live without him. He IS legitimately cruel and he's always talking about killing Michele but there will be a point Michele's goodness will breach through that armor he made for himself (in some ways it already did) believe Ian's actions more than his words cause in some ways they're more honest than what he reasons with in his head.

Yeah that bothered me so much too believe him, I can't believe I'm defending Ian because I usually don't, but the drugging thing becomes relevant for a plot point that happens later and other than the need to control him he's also doing it so Michele would sleep because he has trouble sleeping ever since he came to the north.
