He actually loves him (But we'll have to wait until the end of this season's arc to finally see him put those feelings into words, after quite a lot has happened.) Ian is a complicated character. He's drawn to Michele, but his feelings are tangled up with resentment, fear, distrust and a desperate need to remain in control. He isn't exactly someone who knows how to communicate affection in a healthy way. The next few chapters/episodes will showjust how contradictory he can be in what he says, what he feels and how he behaves. There's a lot going on beneath that passive-aggressive exterior.
