The perfect amount of angst.

I love this so much. I went in with no expectations, didn't check for any spoilers whatsoever. I literally cried the entire time while reading this. At first I hated Heiner for how he treated Annette. But after I understood both of them, I just loved how they managed to set the past aside and be together. I was choked up while thinking that the author must've been a huge fan of misery for writing this gut-wrenching story, but I still love it nonetheless. Even the political aspects of this really hooked me (especially when Kathryn's brother shot Annette.)

But I guess what truly made me appreciate both characters is how they both wanted to change, even when they didn't know exactly how. Annette realized her privileges and didn't take the usual road of elitism despite being introduced to nothing but a life of lavishness as a sheltered only child. Heiner slowly dealt with his insecurities rooted in his trauma, no matter how hard it took him to slowly let Annette see him in a vulnerable state. Can't really blame the man for how he handled things since he never had a proper adult in his life to guide and support him. Let alone address his mental issues.

Verdict is, I love them both.
