I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS MANGA THAT I SPENT MY EVENING THINKING ABOUT IT OMG???
FIRST LET'S TALK ABOUT THE START.. the manga starts with a note; “this is a story of the final year of life at the frontier diner.” THIS SETS A COUNTDOWN FOR READERS, A FEELING OF DREAD THAT’S INEVITABLE, A COUNTDOWN WHERE YOU FEAR THE MANGA STOPPING EVERY CHAPTER. it is a story that isn’t scared of introducing death– but not in the stupid way of authors making characters JUST FOR THEM TO DIE, even if their death was anticlimactic/poorly written. THIS MANGA IS DIFFERENT! it views DEATH as something that’s normal, a force of nature that everyone naturally accepts. THE GOBLIN DYING WITH HIS WISH FINALLY FULFILLED, THE ELF BEING TOLD BY THE TRIBE THAT THEY WILL LIVE A LIFE SEEING GRAVES BECAUSE OF ELVEN LIFESPAN, MASTER HIMSELF SUBTLETY KNOWING THAT HIS DEATH IS NOT SO FAR FROM NOW. everything was clearly planned from the start– HELL THE AUTHOR EVEN INTRODUCED A DEATH WITCH AT THE START– THEN EXPLICITLY SAYING THAT SHE IS A PERSON WHO DOESN’T REVERE LIFE BUT FINDS IT BEAUTIFUL…
DOESNT IT RING A BELL TO YOU? as a society that has accepted living in a digital, capitalistic world, (alongside billionaire companies ruining everything) we find LIFE beautiful, but we forget to take the time and look around and appreciate what is with us. the witch of ruination probably said that for the sake of conversation BUT that is what I interpreted after rereading. almost all of the characters in the story were pessimistic. personally, i think that's THE jab that the author wanted US to experience and find. that humanity finds community, friendship, and even apprenticeship in our darkest days and that the people most unusual to us are probably going to be the bestest friends with us, even if our mindsets are so pessimistic nowadays. although im probably just taking this pretty far– THAT’S BECAUSE THE WORLDBUILDING IS SO GREAT! YOU CAN HAVE THE FREEDOM OF INTERPRETING WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT BECAUSE IT’S SO GREAT!!!!!!!
it’s so striking to me, it’s hitting all the spots that make my heart soft. this manga is so beautifully written… its so fucking bittersweet that we get to see the life of master.. the snippets of him being young, and the usual storyline of him being a role model to his customers and apprentice.. IT IS SO DASTARDLY GOOD OH SHIT ME its soooooo crazy to me because im OBSESSED with something or SOMEONE being so important to the story but they’re already doomed to fate, or they’re already DEAD. HIMMEL, ROSE QUARTZ, I LOVE IT ALL. the comment below me mentioned that this is kind of like the story of frieren but the roles were reversed, and i agree. I totally agree. we follow the narrative of MASTER in his final year of running his bar, the bar that he has poured his life and soul into for decades. we see him when he was young, we see him when he made relationships with his customers, and we see him being knowledgeable about almost everything that the story needs him to solve– similarly like frieren. YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I FUCKING LOVED ABOUT MASTER??? HELL WE EVEN SEE HIM LAMENT THAT HE THOUGHT THAT HE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO DIE. THAT SHIT HURT DUDE.
that’s not all, even though the title explicitly states that it’s a story about being in another world, WE ARE INSTEAD SEEING THE CONSEQUENCES– OR THE AFTERSTORY OF MASTER LIVING HIS FULL LIFE AS AN ISEKAI PERSON. WE ARE VIEWING THE PAST, TOLD BY HIS APPRENTICE AND THE PEOPLE HE HAS INFLUENCED!!!!!!!! it is suchhh a refreshing view of isekai, like i think this actually makes me cry i feel so attached to this manga. LIKE, even if you say his recipes are obviously from modern earth, it’s covered by the fact that the fantasy world is diverse in culture. BITCHH LITERALLY THE ONLY TIME IT WAS MENTIONED THAT HE’S FROM ANOTHER WORLD WAS WHEN HE MUTTERED “i wish this world invented cars” ITS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT THE MOST.
THE AUTHOR STARTED WITH AN ELEMENT (being isekai) AND THOUGHT, “what can i do to make this fucking sexy and godly written AF??” IT IS BEYOND THIS WORLD, IT IS SO FUCKING GENIUS. 100000/10 WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYBODY I FUCKING KNOW.
