The mc is smart but not that smart. Yes the ml shows his very bad sides to him but taking advantage of that would help him a lot in life. Passing up a rich boyfriend at the start is a bad move, refusing his luxuries is embarrassing, and wanting to be soley “independent” and “responsible” doesn’t actually make the mc act on his situation any better. The hardship of his poverty isn’t easily overcome by acting on his own, instead taking advantage of anything that would benefit his life. That is precisely the ml who can easily make his life better if he just acted smarter. But thats my take.
