I don't think he forget as much as he accepted it. Then the MC rolled in on a delayed timeline and things finally picked up for him again... NGL a theory I've had for a while that something wasn't quite right and now it's confirmed he regressed/was also transported into the novel.
So basically the top has been stuck in the book for so long that he is forgetting the real world? That's terrible!
