The ending of the Codename: Anastasia novel is actually a happy ending, but the climax is completely wild.
During the final battle, Taekjoo gets injected with a lethal drug. His heart literally stops, and he is clinically dead for a few minutes. Zhenya completely loses his mind. This terrifying, psychopathic man completely breaks down and actually starts crying while frantically doing CPR to force life back into Taekjoo's body.
When Taekjoo finally wakes up and sees Zhenya crying, he realizes they are permanently tied together. He tells him straight up: "I will never forgive you for what you did to me. But you are the answer to my life."
After the political chaos settles, Taekjoo officially quits being a spy. The NIS grants him a completely new legal identity so he can live safely back in South Korea as a regular civilian.
In the side stories, the dynamic completely flips. Taekjoo has total freedom now and stays with him strictly by choice. Zhenya is the one who develops massive separation anxiety—he gets incredibly clingy when Taekjoo goes to work and even helps take care of Taekjoo’s mom just to keep him happy. The very last scene ends with them kissing in a parking lot, and as Taekjoo drives away, he playfully flashes his brake lights at a thoroughly obsessed, smiling Zhenya. ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍
