that the same people who dislike lortel also like ed. to me, ed and lortel are very similar people but in different fonts. they’re both individuals who have very frankly, got dealt terrible hands in life, and had to struggle tooth and nail to get to where they are today. they’ve both done horrible things in their past that have stained their hands, and at the end of the day, their shared goal is just to survive. for ed, it’s surviving the original story. for lortel, her survival means making sure the company is hers to control, because in her entire life, all she knows is that money makes the world go round and it’s always good to have an abundance of it.
i understand that some people may find her greed and pushy behaviour annoying, but her greed is nowhere near as egregious as yall make it sound. for a good chunk of her childhood she was dirt poor until she wasn’t, and anyone in her position who experienced both poverty and wealth would definitely want to protect their wealth. her pushiness can be annoying i admit, but ed isn’t the kind of person who goes along with people’s desires solely because he thinks he can get something out of it, and that’s because he’s inherently aware that it’s disrespectful to that person’s feelings (case in point, refusing to kiss janica just so he can access the wind spirit’s corpse). he could have rejected lortel at ANY point but he let her kiss him 3 times.
plus, they both acknowledge that they have their dark sides that they’re not comfortable showing to others, and ed clearly trusts lortel enough to showher his weakness, and vice versa, which shows very clearly that ed has feelings for her to an extent and trusts her enough to showher the side where he’s hesitant to showeven janica.
anyway that was a long rant, i’m just annoyed that people seem to hate lortel for the same qualities that can be found in the other girls/ed. lortel is actually a very well written character but yall dislike her because she’s pushy or greedy when that’s such a shallow one dimensional analysis of her character.
