ML is just surviving and yes he is dumb for jumping to conclusions but if you look back, the "Eye Of Truth" fox bead made these arrangements in his life. Most of his decisions are paved for him that he doesn't really think that his situation is permanent, probably even that these are his choices or that he has the capacity to.
Circling back, he just wants the freedom to do and to choose for himself.
