No it's a real thing same sex couples do in countries where same sex marriage isn't a thing, so they can be legally registered as family for like financial and medical purposes

Homosexual marriage is illegal in many east Asian countries. Adoption by one of the partners of the other official officialises them as a family and its the only way possible to have family rights like hospital visits, inheritance and decisions over the funeral and burial. It's the closest thing gay couples have to official marriage before it gets legalised
