I spent the early hours of this morning reading this manga. I found it a difficult read—not because of the quality, as the writing is actually good and none of the characters are one-dimensional—but because Heejae is just so damn insufferable. I found it hard to empathize with him; he’s a proud, despotic, and self-centered man—sharp-tongued and cutting—who simply doesn’t know how to love. He’s set in his ways, like old timber that refuses to change.

It angers me that he justifies his own behavior and refuses to budge or embrace change; that he expects others to bear the consequences of living near someone like him—as if everyone else should simply adapt to his life, his tastes, and his expectations. He is a man completely lacking in self-criticism, who genuinely believes his own actions carry more weight than anyone else’s, trampling on others as if they were worth absolutely nothing.

What a fucking narcissist!! And it really bothers me that Garam let himself be brought down by a shitty old man.
