A lot of countries where gay marriage is illegal will have gay couples register as each other’s family (like being haebom’s “child”) because it can legally bound them together. So in case of emergencies, they have jurisdiction to do anything

By having a direct family relationship they can have access to different things that they normally wouldn’t (for example if one gets in an accident and only family members are allowed in the hospital, they wouldn’t be able to do so without being in the same family registry.)

From what I know, it was used as a way to connect you to your partner in countries that didnt allow gay marriage. So instead of a marriage certificate, the family would adopt the lover as a way to legally make them family and be able to give them the last name as well
