A single alcoholic mother living in the slums suddenly becomes empress through a “contract marriage”? Lmao. This ain’t Princess Sophia. The mother is a fallen noble who got kicked out after her husband disappeared into debt. She’s living in poverty, drinking herself stupid, while her child is the one working to keep them alive. Then she supposedly travels back in time, sells what little they have left to attend a ball, and somehow walks away with a contract marriage to the emperor. Even if it’s a temporary contract and she approached him first, an emperor (temporary or not) elevating a disgraced, impoverished woman with that background into empress and adopting her daughter as a princess is still absurd. At best she might’ve become a concubine. The idea that the court and nobles would just accept this without massive pushback is pure fantasy convenience. The early plot has almost no real political, social, or status consequences. It just hands a terrible mother an easy, glamorous second chance and expects us to go along with it. I probably would’ve turned a blind eye to how mediocre the premise is if it weren’t for the mother herself. She’s incredibly selfish and disgusting, yet the story keeps trying to soften and justify her by framing everything as “for her daughter.” No. She’s doing it for herself. Watching a character like that get such an easy, clean path just doesn’t sit right with me. This is the kind of story that only works if you don’t think about it for more than five seconds… or if you’re as selfish as the mother and can pity her because you see yourself in her shoes. If I were a mother, I would never let my child suffer the way this selfish woman let that poor angel suffer.
