Hope i can articulate everything i want to say well. First of all i am dropping a bomb that creating a addictive story doesnt automatically make u a great writer. Sure if u can make it addictive, u are great at making stories addictive. None of that makes a writer/author bulletproof from criticism on other parts of their stories. One of the biggest complaints i have of many new stories ive picked up is that they use cheap tricks to bait a reader into becoming compelled to continue before using their attachments to pull at the readers heartstrings and then in the end sweep it under the rug once they got that reaction out of u.
The narrative is flawed when it hates on specific characters for their actions, and when the beloved ML does something immoral, the narrative makes excuses for it. Its like u as a reader are in a toxic relationship with the narrative, where it tried to gaslight u into thinking nothing wrong happened or its okay because main character is okay. Dark romance authors seem to treat the emotional turmoil of the reader as a bigger accomplishment than what could've been good writing. U can make a character messed up without consequences, but the narrative has to be consistent.
Now many readers especially younger folk read for escapism and for specific tropes they desire, and they tune out everything else that is wrong with what they read. And THAT is OKAY. (Though defending something an action or the writers decision just to protect ur own mental illusion isnt it) Dont get me wrong, i read for escapism and lightheartedly but i internally dive into the worlds i read to experience them better. But when something is amiss and confusing it all falls apart. SO SORRY THIS IS LONG LMAO
Many of those mentioned stories are beloved, and dont want my critiques of their tropes to be taken personally. Id prefer if any conversation was kept on the topic instead of discussing whether x y or z stories have problematic parts
