Unreliable narration absolutely misses y’all by miles. This man is fucked up, but he’s also absolutely gone on him, you understand that, right? He’s lying to himself. He thinks “I’m manipulating him by opening up to him” bc he needs an excuse lest he face the terrifying fact that he wants so badly to be vulnerable with him. He needs to make it into a situation he feels he is in control of, but the reality is that he likes him so much that it scares him. What scares him he feels like he needs to control. It’s obvious by the interactions and expectations from his family that he is not in control of most of his life.
Doesn’t excuse his actions. It is an explanation though. He needs to get his shit together, obviously, and figure out how to deal with this healthily.
