I think Rensley's actions and insecurities make sense for someone who receives kindness and respect for the first time from someone who matters the most to him. We're talking about a person who's been abused and neglected his whole life here, the thought of being not good enough for someone of high status like Gisel won't go away so easily because it's been ingrained since his childhood, that was how he's been treated by his sorry excuse of a family. He might look cheerful and easygoing, but that's what he's used to do to cover up all that loneliness. Besides, he and Gisel have different upbringings and worldview, so of course there's bound to be misunderstandings. Moreover, Rensley was sick in ch 39, and for some people, it makes them more emotional. Like, just give him a break y'all
