They're not "basically the same thing" in my opinion... there is a clear difference between yaoi and porn. It's like saying that romance movies that show some bed scenes are the same as porn films, when obviously they're not. So I do understand what TotallyMadForYaoi means.

yaoi is normal romance except the girl has a dick!! (even girls aren't THAT girly xD )
but let's face it, almost anything (well about yaoi 100%) that clearly pictures sexual activities is porn!
you can even read people complaining about "not getting enough sex scene" in the comments!
and (again most of) the romance we're talking about has no literary value unfortunately!
yaoi is not the same thing as porn, in my opinion simply due to the content I mean watch porn. Its very different and you can tell right off the bat. However porn is not necessarily bad and some yaoi comes pretty close to it sometimes. but they are not the same thing.
Yaoi is just like Mills & Boon: it's porn aimed at women, for the most part. Women just usually need a bit more plot/emotion to do it for them.
Bara is similar to yaoi, but it's aimed at gay men, so it doesn't waste pages trying to pretend it's not porn.
