my neighbors are deaf, they actually can hear the beats, vibrations in music, they would blast their radio sometimes when i was over. Because they can't hear other sensations are heightened due to that.

Taiko has a very strong bass. It can be felt and heared, that's the way deaf can "hear" too. Every sound is a compression wave in the air. Our ears detect them and our brain changes them into a sound. That is possible because the move the organ in our ear. The stronger the sound, the more it can "moves" something.A loud bass like with Taiko is strong enough to make us feel the sound, not just with our ears, but with our whole body.
If you ever have the possibility join a preformance, it's the best way to see just what it does to your body. (=・ω・=)

    there's different stages of deafness
his is really advanced so he can only hear really loud noises
I'm guessing he could also hear plane engines and explosions and the like
the taiko is a really loud drum and drums can be used as a medium to show emotions too, that probably the reason he was so drawn to them
