Well, seeing as how Shunpei is being tied up to study (I think), I'm pretty sure Shunpei's dad is hitting him because his grades are low. And it's not an abusive kind of hitting, so he's not a bad guy.

Now, to straighten it out, what he did in the pictures is normal in most Asian families (including mine), hardly something to be totally alarmed about and flipping out on. It's not the beat-you-until-you're-half-dead kind and more of the disciplinary kind that some traditional Asian parents submit their children to especially if they did something bad.

That's not child abuse. -.- He's just teaching Shunpei a lesson. Like what most families do. It's just one of those light hits. Not one of the hard hits that make you faint or get a bruise.

@Anonymous: This is where the fact that it's a manga plays in... because most manga and anime will exaggerate such things. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the panels show that despite Shunpei's papa's obvious "anger", it's meant to be light and even humorous. It's not to be taken out of the context and like (^w^)/) Hi! said, it's something that most families do. If yours don't do that to you, then it's a cultural thing.

well in my country that would be illegal... but kinda depends on situation.... i've hit my father and he hit me back, for fun, kinda, so yeah.....

it is never ok to hurt your child, it doesnt matter the culture, he could have stopped giving him money or forbid him to play videogames. now i understand why he choose fumi, because he's the only gentle man he knows, someone who doesn't hit him, he needs this calm person and it is usually shunpei who hits fumi, so shunpei inherited this

@kirishima: Cultures differ and sometimes we have to accept that. While I understand that it is not okay to hit your child, there is a very delicate line between what one considers discipline and one considers as abuse and that delicate line blurs depending on the culture, the law, the family and the environment. No one can limit or put a definition of a family in a box and, regarding the manga, if you look carefully at Shunpei's personality, he is happy, sweet and all-around sunny. His sister is also a carefree young lady, definitely stubborn and headstrong. These are not the personalities of persons who are victims of abuse. The manga is meant to be romantic and light and to be taken at face value. You're over-analyzing something that isn't there. And another note, we haven't totally seen anything about Shunpei's papa beyond those panels. There is no reason to judge him so harshly.
