If I like shoujo, am I fetishizing normal couples? Or, hell, myself? We like what we like. What's important is respecting REAL people, gay or not, as human beings. As long as people don't "oh god you're gay? do you top? bottom? kyaaa", it's fine.

As long as we separate fiction from reality, I don't think liking yaoi is such a bad thing. People on tumblr get triggered about anything.

Definition of homophobia is "dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people". Do you read yaoi because you hate two men making love together or thing that gay relationship is against nature? Fujoshis = homophobia is bullshit. ( ̄へ ̄)

if you flip it around, would someone who likes reading romance with straight couples be fetishizing straight people? no smh and yeah it's just fiction

    Okarisu March 22, 2018 10:47 pm

I wouldn't call you homophobic, but it's true that by reading yaoi you are fetishizing gay men.

This world is going crazy. You can be criticized for anything nowadays. And of course, the people saying fujoshi are in fact homophobic probably think they themselves are extremely tolerant... (most likely tolerant only with the people who share the same beliefs like them... the rest is just ignorant / homophobic / racist / blablabla). They just need someone to bash you know... because it makes them feel better about themselves. In fact I feel sorry for these people...

It's less the 'liking yaoi' part and more the behavior of most people who call themselves fujoshis. it's not uncommon to see people around here saying shit like wishing they were gay/wishing their future children to be gay so they can '''ship''' them/applying sexual & romantic context to every m/m interaction they see for their own enjoyment/comparing liking yaoi to actually being gay/etc. basically dismissing the struggles of the gay community on top of acting as if gay folks exist for their entertainment. that's what fetishizing is. personally, and as a member of the lgbt community, I don't see consuming bl content as inherently fetishizing, but I see where some more... uh radical folks would get that from, with how yaoi tends to depict gay relationships in far less than accurate ways and with little to no regard for actual representation.
imo, as long as you avoid such unbecoming behavior and keep yourself in check so as not to trespass the line between fiction and reality, you're fine.

I am confused. If reading yaoi is fetishizing gay men, then why is reading shoujo or even straight smut not fetishizing heteros? It seems like a double standard to me. It's just like saying guys that play around are "the man" but women who do the same are considered sluts.

From wiktionary: fetishize=To make the subject of (often sexual) obsession.
Are you obsessed with gay people and you behave like the people above said? Then yes you do fetishize gay men.
If you just like reading it, then you don't.

the concept is applied only to minorities because they are at disadvantage in society, and fetishizing those minorities means perpetuating the stigma that surrounds them with labels such as weird/unnatural/eccentric - labels that the whole notion of fetishes encases. meanwhile, being straight is largely seen as the 'default' - thus, even if someone is somehow obsessed over heterosexuality, they're just going to be considered 'normal'. still, as I've stated in a previous comment, I don't believe merely reading any kind of content can bring any harm to the subject in question, so long as you know where to draw the line.

It isn't the same. You can't fetishize straight people.
Please don't try and telling gay people what does or does not fetishize us.

Ok i can understand that. I guess what "normal" is in the eyes of society. And yeah i agree aboutwhat you said about those radical fujoshis. Is really weird when they say shit like that. I have a gay brother, but i don't go around imagining him having sex. Some people just go way too far

While I may not agree with everything stated, I'd say you give a pretty adequate explanation for fetishization.

I think there is a line that should be drawn, because while it may be fiction, the sexualities aren't, so when there are those "yaoi fangirls" who get off or think its their "sexy sin" it makes us real gays uncomfortable. As long as you respect that people who are gay aren't a fetish, then have at the BL/GL!
