Conflicting but Intriguing; Nature vs. Nuture

Sonata August 22, 2018 7:51 am

Now knowing Sooah's past, I can't help but feel sorry yet intrigued by the difference between her and Mirae. It's an idea of nature vs. nuture. If Sooha was raised in the same environment as Mirae, there's the possibility that she would've been just as kind as Mirae. If Mirae was in Sooah's position, Mirae may not have been the same as Sooha as it's been established that she has an "ugly" face. Mirae may have very well been worse than Sooah.

Sooah had no example of love whatsoever. She had no experience to base it off of, so when she finally gets attention for her looks, it's understandable as to why she would become so desparate for it. The attention given to her as the prettiest girl is the only idea of "love" that she experienced, which is quite devastating as it is superficial. However it's all the love she knows. So it's no wonder how she can't fathom true kindness when she is exposed to it.
I don't know how she could be kind if no one never taught her to be kind.

So I can't help but feel conflicted about Sooah's behavior. While it's a really unhealthy way of thinking and her personality is warped, her homelife plays a major part of it. I can totally see why she is like that. Because of the lack of kindness in Sooah, it's what makes Mirae, who exhibits true kindness, so intriguing and irritating to her. In the end, everyone just wants to be loved or accepted whether it be by many or a single person.

I'm looking forward to Mirae showing Sooah what true kindness is and hopefully she will change for the better. (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

I agree with you. You explained Sooah very well. It’s because of her past that I can’t hate her although I definitely don’t condone her actions or thoughts. She wasn’t in control of her environment and she never knew what true kindness was.

Exactly! It makes me interested how Mirae would've turned out if she was in Sooah's position. Since she doesn't have the good looks of Sooah, would Mirae actually have ended her life? Although not shown or I might've missed something, Mirae has kindness and love from her parents. Sure they didn't want to pay for plastic surgery, but it's expensive.( ̄∇ ̄") They also showed concern when she wasn't eating enough too. This shows that Mirae at least has a support system through her parents. Sooah didn't have that. At home, her mother didn't pay attention to her, the dad could care less about her, and her grandma calls her ugly while physically abusing her. Then she experiences it again at school, so learning that her looks are the way out of that hell, heck I would do the same.

Mirae established how she realized they are similar in ways of wanting to be loved and accepted by everyone. The parallels are made as they are both made fun of because of their looks. In the end, they became pretty or try to maintain being pretty as best as they can because unfortunately society cares about looks. But Mirae has something she likes other than being pretty, her perfume. Another difference between Sooah and Mirae as Sooah only wants to be the prettiest girl of them all. So despite being in similar situations, their situations are also very different. Which I find interesting.

Sorry for the long reply ╥﹏╥. I got excited and wanted to have a discussion since I find it interesting how others aren't being as empathetic to Sooah after learning her past. I mean it's understandable as Sooah's behaviour is questionable, but can you really blame her for her personality becoming like that?

No need to apologize! I’m very glad that you wrote this entire perspective! I wanted to basically say the same thing but I didn’t know how to articulate it well. I get why some people dislike her but what I don’t get are the people who blatantly hate her and think she deserves no second chances. I just can’t really blame Sooah because she didn’t choose her upbringing and no one has showed her that she deserves love as a person and not just for her looks. I honestly hope for a happy ending for everyone, definitely including Sooah.

I do wish that people would be more empathetic. Empathy can go a long way and I think that empathy can really change people for the better and unite us all.

Yes, absolutely agree. I feel kinda silly for getting so worked up about a fictional character, but somewhere in this world someone probably experienced what Sooah did. And I can't help but feel disappointed when I see people say they "acknowledge" the situation, but I don't think they really do. Yes her behavior isn't great and her personality isn't the best, but she didn't have anyone to show her until Mirae and Kyungsook. But she deserves a chance to know what's better and not have people hate on her. I guess I'm overreacting since I'm thinking about a real person experiencing Sooah's past and wonder if people would give them the same backlash. ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍
