Throughout the whole series, I was most confused with the actions and behavior of the boyfriend, Wonim. To my understanding, he doesn't actually find out that Hong-ryeon has been acting as Jang-hwa until he finally has sex with Jang-hwa and finds out she's a virgin, which wouldn't have made sense, considering how many times he thought they had sex before.. meaning he was actually sleeping with Hong-ryeon.
Yet once the whole kidnapping incident happens and Jang-hwa goes on a leave of absence, Wonim still sides with Hong-ryeon. And even when Jang-hwa comes back, Wonim makes a moves on her but gives up after failing once. He continues to side with Hong-ryeon, even towards the end. And what's that part about being able to differntiate the two because one smokes? He even got that wrong.
