I don't know exactly but this is what I understood:
*Spoiler if you didn't read*
The fox fell in love with the human and asked if they could stay together forever. But he was just a child and didn't understand that his 'forever' was shorter then a human's 'forever'. The human died because his lifespan, but the fox was immortal so he lived. That is why he said that the human was cruel I think he was sitting at an alter when he said that.
