It is more true to real life though. People can't change their past or their nature because of one person, just like that. Onod issues with commitments, he was honest with Chikage about it. Chikage was fine with one-sided open relationship but Ono still felt guilty about cheating. He lives Tachibana but he is trying to be faithful to Chikage. It's a slow ongoing process.
