I remember this story well, but not the title, because it's not the main story. It should be part of a collection of stories (although there's a small chance it's instead an extra story at the end of a main/longer one) by someone established like perhaps Katou Setsuko or Masao Sangatsu...but I haven't found it yet, so I can't say who for certain.

(More story details, in case it helps anyone else think of it: It MIGHT be a 2-chapter one. They're university dorm mates in a room with three guys, the MC is fairly socially awkward (for instance, he can't tell the neighbours nicely that they've been making too much noise when they come to complain themselves) but the ML is good at getting along with people. They become tight, but when the the ML wants to move out together after university, the MC refuses (because he likes him and it's already painful but at least they have the third guy as a buffer) and causes a rift. Which is why he distances himself and has to sneak back to get his stuff and panics and jumps out the window when the guy comes home.
