It's because he was too young and didn't really know how to react when he realized that he fell in love with him back then
So since the tutor was the first guy who accepted who he was he thought it was love
He forgot the love he felt when he was young because he didn't think it was worth remembering a time of confusion when he was a child
But now that he's right in front of the fact je can't deny his first love and everything come right back at him
I think it's more like this but maybe it's just my perception of the story
