Not profound at all

It was clear both the usu and the masters were sentient, intelligent, capable of holding to an ideology and some even a religion, had strong desires and wishes. I'd say "Prime Directive" on this one: if they're okay with it and happy, leave them alone. It's their culture. Happy being the key issue: Minoa wasn't distressed by the process due to cultural indoctrination. We never learned if the masters could subsist on grass/vegetables (possibly they could or could not). And on another planet, that's their business how they set up their society.

If the Usu were clearly unwilling or terrified or abused, I'd say blow the fucking masters out to space. :)

On earth, a cow is nowhere on the same level as a human. They don't have art, philosophy, religion. They don't exhibit any specific desires beyond animal ones--they dont' dream of going to Paris to be a cow sculptor or to have a pasture of their own with shrubbery. They are neither willing nor unwilling. They just are. The minute they are as sentient as humans, we should not eat them.
