    Well if his wife died when the child was born, then it sounds like projected feelings. His love for his wife went to the kid, even if he was aware and there was no sexual attraction. And if his own parents passed shortly after, the only person he still had was his kid. So it wasn't really love as a woman.
    It was purely anxiety to loose the last person who was precious to him and that mixed woth normal parental love.
    That does happen in real life as well. Dependency and overprotectiveness as well as a huge wish to monopolise and isolate that person, to make sure, they will not leave. Considering what could have happened, that is a very shallow description.
