Not sure what happened but I guess an issue with the publisher & licensing rights?
The author wanted to continue the story so put out a bunch of doujinshi during the years of publication and after the hiatus. Some are AUs and obviously for fun. Others give background on the story such as the prequels at the school. Some were sequels to the main story.
It's not unheard of for mangakas to do.
I have seem a few have a lot of installments within the same universe like the Rules series but they were all official publications not doujinshi.
