When he was rejected by society he holed away in the Burial Mounds which is located in Yiling.
He experimented and was able to succeed giving Wen Ning conscious thoughts- he didn’t think he’d be able too. I can’t remember if it was because of the Stygian Tiger Seal or not- I know he uses this to control (or loose control) of him.
Oh, and I guess also the fact after Wen Chao tried to kill him in the burial mounds, he fully developed his demonic cultivation and came back with a vengeance and started wiping out the Wen sect.

I'm a little confused on what "Yiling Patriarch" means. I read in the fandom page that Wei Wuxian became the Yiling Patriarch to destroy the Wens but what does that exactly mean? Did he become a leader of some sort? Oh, and why is it that Wen Ning (Ghost General) is the only corpse that was able to be conscious & respond to Wei Wuxian as himself? Thanx in advance!(▰˘◡˘▰)
