When he said that he was insecure without the rope does he mean that he feels like he's forced to be acknowledged when he's in a helpless state? I took it to mean something like that, since our main character is justified in ignoring him when he's just an intruder, but when he's being held captive and tied up at least stalker gets noticed and taken care of.
