Maybe when Erin's mother said in chapter 35 "When the grim reaper comes for you, act proudly, and look at him in the eye without fear" is her prediction to the future of Erin since she is an excellent tarot reader the mother predicted that her daughter Erin will meet the duke and cast magic and eventually found her love a be a duchess.. The grim reaper is the duke in chapter 36 the butler called the duke grim reaper because of his prowess in the war.

I was thinking just that and maybe the mum was saying when Erin is around the duke she should look at him and feel love not fear and I think when that happens the truth may be revealed
