Wrong as it may be the deed itself, tragic as it may seem, is actually quite common. The same goes for shaking your child.

It is a sad thing, but quite often a mother killed her child by accident as she was driven to the brink by the poor thing's crying. Either by shaking or suffocation. I think that is a bit what the author tried to show, but since it was a short story they couldn't really portray it properly and thus failed in an extreme sense to show his anguish.

The child ofcourse knows not what is happening, and that is why it is tragic. Youka Nitta is known to try to draw attention to things like this, like in Haru wo Daite Ita she draws the attention to the tragic life of the Transgenders in Japan or Erectile dysfunction. Sadly in this case she failed as it just shows like the character is very mean, fickle, selfish and passive aggressive to boot. As he just goes out to get a child and not moments later he tries to suffocate him.

It really doesn't draw attention to this sad business, it just seems.... odd.

I totally agree with you!! In this Author is just trying to show the feelings of a lonely person... who just thinks that he is lonely... and there is no one for him but there are people who care for him..
