you got the order reversed. the plot said they are top of the elite - but they could only be smart if the author has the skill to pull off real smart characters. But like you said - none of their behavior was any smart.

Their stupid behavior proves that intelligence is worthless if you don't use your knowledge in reality.
I mean, I'm not that intelligent as them.
