I know Laurent was bit selfish but I would love to have lover like Athur who would sacrifice everything for his love and I kind get Laurent's reason for not accepting Athur while he was a noblemen because if he did Athur's reputation would have became bad and would have became the victims of social predujice and discrimination not just for bieng gay but because of the difference social status if it got out which I think was common in the era where the story was set. And there is also family matter where Athur would have been expected to get married produce a hier if he stayed as anoble man despite bieng in an relationship with Laurent and it would have broken both of Thierry heart more that ever I mean who would like to be a relation where they know that their lover is married to someone else and have separate family of their own.
