The cruelty of wars

The author doesn't really show the cruelty of wars via brutal or deadly scenes, but how she utilizes the characters of Ren-kun and his auntie is just excellent! I feel so sad for them, and my heart was wrenched when I saw Ren's innocent face among all the destruction caused by war, and tears kept flowing upon my learning that Auntie Machi would probably die because her serious injury. I hope that they, or at least Ren-kun, would be saved. Wasn't there a scene where Maeda said he would love to foster 'that kid' in Japan?

Seems like supporting characters in her story always have a role to play. Great.

I couldn't agree with you guys more. But by mentioning the older woman, were you referring to the grandma with gun in Tengoku mo Jigoku mo?

I feel for the little kid too. Not many kids his age are as lucky to be alive at war, though.
