I live in a countryside small village and have 5 cats at home. My garden is often visited by wild animals and birds are certainly the most numerous. Pheasants come every year too. Oh and there are 3 wild cats camping in my garden nowadays.
Those birds will most probably be hunted by hunters than my cats, I assure you.
Please don't be irked, the op was 100% right. Many species are threatened because of them. While they are a big help to keep pests out of barns and such, they can deal a big blow to the environment.

Please keep your cats inside always. They can get hit by cars and studies show cats are one of the biggest reasons local birds and critters go extinct and thus affect the surroundings by other animals trying to fill the niché and doing harm.
