The point of the uproar is that people feel for the character ED, I don't see anybody pointing out that people shouldn't be extremely happy when there is a couple that is portrayed to be super cute and saying that on the comment section. It's the same with this they felt the negative emotions portrayed and they are expressing it, it's not about preference, people read for the story and what makes a good story is one that makes you feel something whether good or bad, these people are being affected by the story which is completely understandable since they are invested, this just goes to show the author did a good job with it.
