This would not be a Yamamoto Kotetsuko manga if Shiratori was really going to rape Chun. Even if nothing else had stopped him, he would have stopped himself at the last minute. He was never going to rape Chun. That's not the kind of character he is. If he was an actual rapist, you wouldn't be reading a Yamamoto Kotetsuko manga.
Going the extra mile to pass judgement on a character who didn't do anything wrong seems unnecessary. This story should bring as much pleasure reading it as YK intended when she wrote it.
I read this when it first came out before it was even finished, and if you go back and look at the comments from that time on page 8, you'll notice a marked difference in the attitudes of that time compared to now. The radical shift of readers now into seeing all the worst possible, most negative aspects of this and other manga makes me wonder if I haven't accidentally landed in yaoi hell.
YK's characters do outrageous things, and they're funny as hell. It's in the nature of Shiratori to be a maniac for love. He's cute and sexy as he makes a fool of himself for Chun over and over, but his most outstanding feature is his steadfast heart, not that he's a maybe woulda-kinda-sorta-could have been but not likely rapist.
The character is a human being of outstanding skill. That's not easy and it speaks for his dedication, loyalty, and discipline.
Shiratori is sweet and generous to a fault with Chun, and he didn't commit any crimes, so really, when there's so much to like, I don't see how the negativity rises so easily above it for anyone.

to attempt rape means that you physically tried to rape using force and violence, but were not able because of reasons such as the victim fought you off.

The scenes for this are so hilarious, so nonsensical, so slapstick, so comical with the two men arguing over not-really-sleeping Chun's sleeping body, With Reichi claiming one minute that they did it when they were young, the next bluntly stating that Chun has always guarded his virginity. These circumstances are so ridiculous that I can't believe that anyone, even the most tense, clenched anus, tight-bunned dried up old cracklin, could turn any of it into an attempted rape. Don't be stupid.
Reichi let's it slip that he has always known that nothing happened when they were younger. He also is not all that crazy, violently impatient to get the other guy to leave. They're like two teenage girls discussing who loves who the most. He never does get taka to leave so he can perpetrate his crime. laughable.
