well since they violated the space rules by healing/ resurructing natsume, they are now forgotten (at least hotaru is) and are now drifting place to place in the space time line (future, present, past). And so the story then ends when mikan agrees to help find them. (apparently, there is a mushroom microphone that lets them communicate to each other, and ruka is the only one that remembers hotaru.)
