Of course Niro behavior is ridiculous but I think this is a part of his character development. Being a slave, a dick and finally a great guy, because he would surely understand that status and family don't make the man (or woman).
So yes, I understand that you're impatient for Niro to became who he was or should be, but moreover you should look at the narrative beyond of the few last chapters. Be strong !
