After reading the latest comment I have to state this out.
Usagi is not a saint considering the way they first met. Even so I don't think he'd be interested in someone who thinks that if their partner is having low self esteem that they are not worth comforting and supporting. Akihiko Usami is definitely NOT husband material for YOU.
Mind your business punk, I'll decide who's husband material for me and who isn't. I'd want to be with a man like Akihiko, I would never want to be with a man like Misaki. There's a limit to reasonable patience and Misaki has well surpassed that limit already, that's why Akihiko is a saint to still stick with him.
In all seriousness, everyone's always ragging how oh-so-unhealthy Akihiko is but I disagree completely, Akihiko's not the unhealthy one, MISAKI is. Akihiko has always helped Misaki with all important matters, Akihiko has always been firm and resolute about his love and Akihiko has always defended Misaki to Sumi and to his own father. Akihiko's the one who always, constantly has to reassure Misaki that everything's going to be ok. 18 volumes and what is it that Misaki's done? NOTHING. What do you get out of Akihiko? Support, loyalty, reassurance and really good sex. What do you get out of Misaki? Zero, nada, zilch, you always have to chase after him and push him in the right direction because if it were up to him nothing would happen ever. Let me tell you one thing kid, in real life living with a man like Misaki is hell, a man like Misaki is always wearing you down with doubt and worry. Nobody dies of good sex, millions die of stress. And Misaki is an incredibly stressful man.
Akihiko's actually stated that he's always doubting himself and it's shown that Misaki's inactivity frustrates him so it's really infuriating that a man of a love so pure and true has to suffer so. Misaki's said that he's fine with the way they met and he's always swooning and going in raptures whenever he's with him so what's he waiting for? Kid, we know you love him! You gotta tell HIM now, not us! Even Kaoruko's warned him:

I'm really hoping Fuyuhiko acts like a responsible father and finds someone healthy for Usagi because he deserves so much better than the man he's with right now. Misaki needs to learn the life lesson that if you don't cherish the people you love, you end up losing them for good.

They've been together for 3 years I think it's fine to finally to say it. I'm a really shy person but by the 2nd year I would've said it. Plus he's like 21 or 22 I believe young but old enough to be a man. Lol even Onodenera is catching up to Misaki in saying I love you. This isn't even about being shy anymore, with how stalker-ish Ijuuin is being, how the help can you not snap? Or maybe it's all a matter of cultural differences? Are the Japanese really that introverted to the point that they'll endure almost anything, even if it's highly inappropiate and rude to their person and their significant other? And so repressed when it comes to sharing their feelings...my gawd! I will cherish this manga (and Misaki/Usagi) forever, as it was my first yaoi, but at one point, Misaki's behavior becomes so tiring and irritating. And I know I'm not the only fan to think that.
i dont think, misaki would slap Ijuuin, because he is Misakis favorite Mangaka and he like him since he is a child D: of course he cant say something like that. And misaki had already rejected Ijuuin, but he wont give up!
Yeah... Usagi now has to keep fighting Ijuuin every month because Misaki can't slap his favorite mangaka off? Not even because Misaki supposedly is in love with said mangaka, because he just really likes the manga he makes? Dude. That's just cruel. In all honesty I'd tell that bf to fuck off. What the fuck. Who the hell does he take me for. Misaki is a huge hypocrite considering he doesn't need to fear retaliation as he's got one of the most influential people in the company on his side and he turns into a vicious bitch whenever he thinks someone's trying to take Usagi away from him. Whenever that happened Usagi's response was appropriate, he made Misaki his priority and said loud and clear "FUCK OFF I'M TAKEN" or cleared the misunderstanding immediately.
Misaki just stands there in the bushes and makes everyone else do all the work. I pity the girl who has a bf like him and I pity Usagi-san too because a honest man deserves a honest lover. Don't get me wrong, I love this manga and I'll keep reading because I'm really intrigued and I want to see how it ends, but if Misaki doesn't change his attitude by the end I'll write 1000 fics each one a different fanboy stealing Usagi from him, and with each one Usagi will be the uke because he's earned the right to sit back and relax.
I agree with everything you guys are saying, 100%, but Misaki will forever be my favorite anime character. I honestly don't know why actually. He really doesn't have any balls (besides that one time he screamed, "Usagi-san is mine!" that was pretty ballsy) what's so ever, but somehow I feel that the things he does, the things he says, are his special way of showing his affection towards Akihiko. However, I do feel bad for him, (for Akihiko) it really must be frustrating, but I don't know which one would be my husband materiel. Akihiko is exactly like me, he's pretty reserved, adores writing, gets envious easily, and is selfish when it comes to love. Me and him would probably be twins. It would be really weird though. While Misaki is overly kind, adorable (I believe), dense (like his brother), bashful, not selfish, and irritating when it comes to love, why that is, I don't know. Maybe he's afraid? That would be stupid though, maybe it's a reason beyond our reach. Remember Nakamura made the characters like this for a reason, so maybe there's a secret side to every character, if so: what's Misaki? Because I'm pretty sure all of you know those characters who are happy on the outside but on the inside sad, hell that happens in real life. Maybe Misaki is bashful on the outside but inside he is frank? Ok, I know that's the dumbest fucking theory but, it's better then none people. So that concludes this "reply" and p.s Misaki will always be my favorite boy no matter if he has some balls or not.

he can't, don't make it seem so simple. he's not only a mangaka, he's also an important client to the company he works for. that means he can't exactly cause a big scene. and he can't just walk up to his superiors and be like "i'm dating usami akihiko. i'm not comfortable being around ijujin-sensei who's all but stalking me". -_- it's really just not that simple. and no, the japanese culture isn't very affectionate, so misaki's thinking is pretty standard. and he may be 22 but he's still a young adult. the situations complicated and would be hard for anyone to deal with. and misaki does try everything to comfort usagi when he's got something bugging him. i love the character development i see between these two over the entire series. it's slow going, but it's still there. i'll always ship them.

If Misaki were my boyfriend I would have dumped him for someone better and not so focused on being nothing more than a 24/7 human impression of a gaping fish crossed with a nagging, frustrating worry-wart incapable of doing anything of his own initiative for once in his life.
Akihiko Usami is definitely THE husband material for me.
