Been a year or so since I finish the novel...
Continuing from the webtoon...Despite ML's efforts, he couldn't stop his own men from wanting MC's life. In particular, his own uncle, who knows that MC's existence is a threat to Southern Yan. Thats why the Uncle keeps on driving a wedge between them. He had his men attempt to castrate MC, while they lied to MC that this was ML's orders. ML rushes in and stopped it but MC is extremely confused by the mixed messages (* In the webtoon, it was the Uncle who stopped it but in the novel it was the ML.)
(In the webtoon, Ping Ping and his sister left because of ML.) But in the novel...MC's own people snuck back into the palace to help him and his sister escape. MC last message to ML: "From henceforth you and I shall be only passersby, walking our different paths. All the worries and bitterness, everything in the past, you should let go of. Here's wishing you the heights of glory and prosperity." ML hears this and was heartbroken :( ML thinks MC doesn't love him anymore so he let MC go.
MC goes into hiding in a remote village as for his sister went to live at Ping Ping's country. During the traveling to the village, MC stumbles across a madman in a fields. (The field was scattered of charred bodies from the war) MC realizes it was XCG. XCG sees him and asks: "Emperor! Do you know where General Li is? I delivered the supplies! I delivered them! Tell him to come meet me! With these rations, we will definitely be able to stop the Southern Yan kingdom from invading!! Where is General Li?! " (XCG and General Li was a side couple in the novel who had a BE ending) MC realizes XCG is officially insane and tries his best to take care of him. He and XCG went and lived at the village along with his ex soldier and concubine - the ones he sent away in the beginning of the story.
After three years, Ping Ping and his sister got married. MC attended the wedding and met his original body who also has his name before transmitting into the novel. That person was Ping Ping's younger brother. The rumored prince who was always sick... Shortly after MC and ML reunites. MC saves ML at the mountain while picking up herbs. ML was injured and temporarily blind. MC disguise his voice into a lady to deceive the ML by taking a special herb. While blind ML was cold toward MC. But after ML recovered his eyes within the next days and he realize it was the MC. ML was attatch to MC everywhere he goes. Meanwhile, MC still thinks ML is blind. MC was trying to send ML away but ML tears at his own wounds to stay longer with MC. (Poor ML misses MC so much that he tries finding him in the past three years)

MC realizes ML does love him. ML pleads with MC to go home with him and MC agrees. XCG hears this and asks MC to take him too. XCG finally starts showing signs of lucidity after those three years. MC is torn, but XCG pleads with him to let him see his homeland, so MC reluctantly agrees. Our couple and XCG returns back to Southern Yan.

This part will focus more on XCG.
After arriving, XCG escapes and wanders around the former Northern kingdom capital. He stumbles into his family home and learns all his family members committed suicide on the day of the Northern Kingdom's fell. His family believed he died in the battle and committed suicide to be with him. XCG regains his memories and is mad with grief. XCG recruited Northern Kingdom's old soldiers to try to take MC away from ML and to overthrow the ML's reign. XCG attempts assasination on ML. ML was injured during the attack and when MC tries to bind ML's injuries, XCG was enraged and consider MC as a traitor to Northern Kingdom. When the reinforcement of Southern Yan's soldiers arrived, XCG attacks them in his last stand and dies. The Southern Yan soldiers accused MC of inciting the rebellion. MC comes to the understanding that the fighting will never stop, unless he too dies... MC entrusted ML's soldiers with his last words: "Please tell him to live out the rest of his life happily. And I want to see what his peaceful and prosperous world looks like." As ML was recovering from his injuries, he dragged his wounded body over and tried to stop MC. But he didn't get there in time and can only watch MC commit suicide in front of him.....to be continue..
What ╥﹏╥ this is so heartbreaking
I know, this part of the novel is very tragic for the main couple. The author did commented in the bonus chapter, despite MC's cheerful and outgoing demeanor; MC had a very low self-worth and it's not something that could change overnight or in any short period of time. That's why he was able to commit suicide.
Continuing where I off..
In the afterlife, he was greeted by General Li, Xie Chungui, and the many others who died to protect him and the kingdom. MC cries and apologizes for failing them. But they all tell him that their fates were their own choices and he did nothing wrong. Their only wish is for him live in peace and happiness. They tell him, "There's someone still waiting for you", and push him back.
Remember the prince I mentioned before..MC awakens to see he was incarnated in the body of that prince. To be more precise, he wakes up in ML's bed ;) MC thought everything which happened must be a "bad dream". So he calls ML by their usual pet names. ML wakes up and is enraged instead of happy. MC was very confused until he realizes ('regains that prince's memories') that the original prince was in the ML's bed because he was trying to seduce ML with an aphrodisiac.... (The original host killed himself out of shame of realizing how low he had fallen.) MC also learned how ML was deeply grieving after he committed suicide (Southern King). ML was in denial of MC's death and he cried for 3 days. ML buried MC's body in red wedding robe and kept on asking the grave when will MC will return to him. ML visits the grave every day.

Since MC came back to life into the body of XPY's brother; he got rid of his identity as the Northern Kingdom emperor and became the prince of Western Shu. But because XPY married Yongning, the role of forming an alliance fell onto her brother. With the prince and ML's marriage, Southern Yan and Western Shu would be able to merge peacefully.
*** Also, the maidservant who was sent to serve MC was Hongxiu's younger sister, Tianxiang. TX and everyone else in the palace felt bad for the prince of Western Shu. Everyone knows Xiao Wangye was pitiful for falling in love with ML, who only has a dead guy in his heart.
ML refuses to see MC after the aphrodisiac poisoning. When MC decided to visit his own gravesite to try to talk to ML, MC recognized the flute place on the tombstone. It was the flute he gave to ML. But unfortunately, MC broked the flute..ML was enraged and order his people to send MC back to Western Shu Kingdom immediately. MC was desperate to get to ML but he couldn't. On his last effort, MC nipped his finger and used his blood to write 'I Love You' on a piece of cloth. He then asked TX if she could bring it to ML for him while being dragged away. TX was worried about throwing her life away because she knew the emperor was already enrage by MC. But feeling bad for MC she went to find the emperor. While she begging the guards at the door to let her talk to the emperor, one of them took the piece of cloth and threw it into a nearby pond. Since the words were written with blood, they were washed right away. At this point, TX was desperate and crying. She threw herself at ML's feet when she saw him came out and begged him to please listen to her. ML patiently waited but with the words on the cloth ruined, she could only write the words the best she could remember with her own blood on the floor. ML didn't react and gently told her to go back and left. But a few moments later, something finally clicked and ML ran back to the words on the floor. In this world, only him and MC knew what those words meant. He quickly stopped TX and asked her who taught her how to write those words.
During that time, there was an assassination attempt on MC's life. Sadly, it wasn't ML who saved him. It was CG! XPY feared for Xiao Wangye's safety and sent a group to protect him. After they left, ML came thundering over on a horse and asked where MC's carriage was, then rush after it.
After they reunited, there were a lot of sweet and fluffy moments :D But there is still the last arc in the novel. The last plot; MC knew one of ML's generals, Huang Yue, wanted to assassinate ML for the throne. But I'm not going to go in details for the last arc since it's mainly our couple battling against HY. There is a few ups and down in the last arc such as how traumatized the ML is by MC's prior death. ML is always afraid MC will leave him again. But overall, they won and healed together. At the end, they had their grand wedding :) ML promise to MC at the end of the novel, "I refuse to let down, refuse to let go, refuse to let pass. Even if your leg gets better, I will still carry you. In my harem, there will only be you." ♡
Yes...I knew it. This story is uniquely similar to MDZS...can’t wait to read the novel in one go. Lol
