Disclaimer: I do like this story, even when there is never a surprise because we always know that she will succeed. That being said, I think the author is not very good at world building. How can you explain that they have magic to completely transform the appearance of a persona, but is not develop enough to do an MRI (or whatever you need to diagnose a clot in the heart). That's silly. And, if the family ought to decide if she can or cannot perform the surgery, why she only ask Linden for consent?, is not the blonde prince also a child of the emperor?, why would the counsel allow Linden to decide about his father treatment when they suspect him? why is he even allowed near the emperor? Also, I imagine you require a lot of strength to remove the sternum, and she did it all alone with a rudimentary saw, did she used magic then?
