actually, both boys didn't die.. (kinda) since Haru was first a merman, he and rin are both mermaids together! ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ﾉ~
And I'm also guessing that he gave him his blood so he could become one or immortal and they where talking about it in the story if you eat mermaid flesh or blood you become immoral something like that
