Kane and Shen were bio engineered companions that had only one flaw. They loved so fiercely that when the one they loved tried to leave them they tried to hold onto that someone by confining them or even destroying them. (Just like Kane confined Luna and Shen killed the bird and almost killed Luna).
Luna was created by Kane to love him an only him. When Kane told Luna that he was just a puppet and would not believe in his love Luna shut down and lost all of his memories (which is a way of leaving someone) so Kane sealed him away. Shen found Luna after Kane had sealed him away. Kane and Shen proceeded to fight over Luna.
