Cliffhangers are a good way to make the readers wish for more. Some people gets really impatient and buy the real thing(in this case, manga) for not being able to wait for it to fall on the internet. Besides, I think cliffhangers are a good way to make readers who didn't enjoy the plot very much to keep on reading, purely because of curiosity,and not because they liked it (me, for example. Althought I do stop after the cliffhanger)

lol first time I heard that term was a manga and I thought it was kinda hilarious...well I think it was "candy and the whip." but same technique. Yaoi manga is completely this all the way through.
