They don't have much issues with communicating - rather, I think my problem maybe been just the script writing. Maybe it's the way some dialogue comes off as straight from a teen novel rubs off wrongly on me. /ponders
I feel like author could've eased it in a bit with Heil x River pairing now that they're canon. Don't get me wrong, I ship them so hard but it feels like author keeps going out of her way to assure us, through either River or Nana, don't worry, they won't get together, Khaol was my past, now you're my future, all the time. Remember that good writing = SHOW, NOT TELL, and there's been so much of 'telling'. Am I the only one who doesn't appreciate it whenever author does this?
