Not saying that i hate them but as a girl, i feel terribly annoyed and insulted whenever a manga depicts the heroin as a damsel in distress. Dont you feel like, i dont know, being potrayed as weak, needs guys as protectors, have to stay at home, cook, take care of kids, etc, etc is reeeeeeaaally insulting? Im a feminist seriously. Im not saying that we dont need guys cos honestly we do, but im saying that we are strong and we are able to take care of ourselves and that guys should not reduce us to mere housewives or broodmares. What about you guys?

This is why I stopped reading shoujo. I couldn't stomach any more damsels in distress and Mary Sues. Rarely Do I find a shoujo manga that has a strong and likeable heroine

True. Very few and far between. The only ones I can remember off the top of my head are Last game, Faster than a kiss, Soredemo sekai wa utsukushii, and (the manga with the girly guy and the strong girl). I absolutely hate it when girls are reduced to a helpless mess.
Guess that's why I switch to Shonen manga girls like Mikasa, Touka, etc. because they're so badass and awesome.

Unfortunately, that's a trope in most shoujos and most of the time, the men in shoujo mangas are assholes.
But as a feminist, I think that women should be allowed to be weak, and strong and maybe a damsel in distress, cuz ya know, we're only human. But to just portray them as weak is unacceptable. So i get what you mean. :)
Uggh so hard these days to find a good shoujo without seeing the usual tropes.

Some shoujo mangas that I've read and actually liked was Maid-sama, W-Juliet (SO CUTE I CAN'T EVEN), Usotsuki Lily, there's somemore but I can't seem to remember.

Read Cheese In The Trap and you'll be blown away.

And this is not only the case with shoujo, but yaoi too. Most female side characters are often portrayed as bitchy and clingy. Many uke, who are labelled as the 'girl' in the relationship, isn't all that different either. It's our society.

That's why I stop reading shojo, why do girls have to be so weak and pathetic. She always go with the douchebag while leading the nice guy on fucking stop. And I am pretty sure "a normal girl" have that many handsome guy hanging around her. I hate those korean manga too & drama. They make it seem so normal.

i totally agree in most of the shojo the heroin is weak is not the problem she is nothing without the guy and annoying and the side caracter is a bit** and mean.
but our society should have evolved about the place of the woman.

I'm afraid out current society still sucks. Even we ourselves tend to unconsciously disrespect out own gender. (like those girls buzzing around the hot guy like they have no life. Seriously? Is that actually a normal thing?)

Well, going back to shoujo. Reading bad shoujo is like reading bad yaoi. It's there because they guy is hot. What's more affective than having a useless heroine/uke to show off his majestic charm? I mean, if the girl/uke is too capable, then there will have to be an actual plot and that's kinda hard you know? Just with shoujo, it's usually longer. Which makes it all the more gruesome.

    Omg feminist like me!!!
I hate weak crybaby heroine who cry over for love!
And I found the girls who flock around the 'handsome' guy in manga are stupid & seriously ridiculous. Wtf that woman do. Fighting over man? Well I know it's manga but that's make no sense.
The weak helpless in love heroine will has to face her love rival, the prettiest girl in school who is very brave to clinging over to that handsome boy and rub her breast nonchalantly to this handsome boy.
I actually find this type of girl in manga irritating and duping. But if it write in comedic way it will pretty funny.

    Akiharu88 October 29, 2015 10:10 pm

I am tired of it too but in Aoharu x Kikanjuu the mgc is awesome and fights really good (●'◡'●)ノ

I totally agree with you. I specially don't like inverse harem, when the girl just get kiss by every single boy, and so weak minded. She can't choose one of the guys but wants all of them to be friends.

I don't like any kind of harem. Unless it's for comedy or ecchi. So just for laughing matter it's fine but not serious one.
One girl with many boys and she keeps saying what should I do? what should I do? Does he love me? Does he hate me? Oh xxx-kun is meeting with his ex. Seriously?
I know it just manga but still

To be fair, not all shojos are like that, and if you look at josei, its much better in that sense too. There are also lots of ukes in yaoi that are just as annoying tbh.

But in general terms, girls in shojos DO end up being annoying :P

    fujoshineko October 30, 2015 1:04 am

I liked Ao Haru Ride and Pochamani; the heroines were plenty likeable.

    Sky October 30, 2015 5:29 am

I completely agree! Girls are depicted as sich weaklings! I don't even know where the mangaka gets their reference from because we are most definitely not weak and pathetic like the girls in shoujo manga.

But seriously i dont get why they must put such a label on us. We girls must be bitchy or clingy or shy or gold digger or yamato nadeshiko etc, etc. Why cant any mangaka make a normal girl with a normal personality? Its not as if every girls are bitches that is in heat over hot guys.

I mean like seriously, this is not victorian era or heian era. We girls have transformed over the years. Maybe we are such stupid submissive bitches in victorian era but now we are more than that! We are actually on the same level as guys! Why cant mangakas capture that?

Yeah! We are not in victorian era who should go husband hunting, handsome & wealthy.
I think this type of girls are what selling in most shoujo. So they still make it that way. But not all shoujo like this. Still many of women are portrayed as weak, clingy, bitches, in many manga. Josei have more normal woman nature than shoujo.
