I'm just sad for Kaveri. He wanted Khaol to learn to live without him but at that point I think Khaol should just... Either try to atone for what he's done and forgive himself while cherishing those memories, or die trying and finally be reunited with him. These are the only valid options I see for them. Also I don't think he's trying to win River back. He's trying to protect him. I think it's rather selfless, and that would make some great character development.
